AJAX is an acronym for a collection of technologies that allow users to interact with your website or browser-based system in a natural way, akin to using a normal computer interface.

AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML.
In brief terms for the more technically minded:
Asynchronous: requests some information from the website (behind the scenes) and then receives a response back when it's ready.
JavaScript: A programming language which works inside the webpage to orchestrate the operation.
XML: A format for sending information in, back to the browser. Actually, it's more commonly in JSON nowadays, but that's another story!
